Art is in the eye of the beholder and so too are the images that inspire. My work varies from painting, drawing , sculpting and photography. I get my inspiration from artists that I love, things that surround me, my family and my imagination.

Wearable Artwork

I have wanted to do this project for a while, but as I have never worked with resin before, I was a little apprehensive.  None-the-less, I have done it!  This is how I went about it.

I had many drawings I had done whilst on my Winter holidays in June/July, so I chose one that appealed to me.

I then reduced it 4 times on the photocopier, to get the desired size for a stirling silver pendant I had purchased for a 'very reasonable' price on e-bay.
I touched up the black to ensure it was a true black and then put double sided tape on the image and inserted into the pendant.

I then read the manufactures instructions 'very carefully' and mixed 100ml of resin to 1.5ml of catalyst.  Always have a very well ventilated space to do this as the resin is very toxic.  I did this outside.   Mix the resin and catalyst in a washed butter container and a paddle pop stick.  This allows the chemical reaction to place- heating.
Bubbles start to form and you can pop them with a toothpick.  Let this set for 5 mins before putting on the image.
Next you start in the middle of the image adding drops in the centre of the pendant, one at a time.  Keep doing this until the whole pendant is filled.
Place a container over top of the pendant so that dust wont stick to it.  Check on it to pop any other bubble s that come to the surface.
And that's it- my first piece of wearable art!
This is me wearing it the next day- loving it.  Lots more to come!

Recreation of a canvas

I have had a canvas over my bed for the past 5 years and decided amongst all the rain that we are having in my neck of the woods lately, that I would change it.  So the above is the final product.  I am really happy with it.  It kind of evolved as I did it.  I didn't have any set design or plan and I love it!
So once again I have used my trusted friend- modelling compound- love this product!  As you can see the old painting was very 'structured' and in my stage at the moment is more free form and liberal!

Using the modelling compound or textured paste, I smeared the compound over the old painting using a spatula.  I ensured that it was added quite thickly and only on one third of the canvas.

Next I painted over the entire canvas with my trusty Dulux white wash and wear- 2 coats.
I then went over the other 2 thirds of the canvas with a mix of white paint and impasto gel- making it quite thick again, but a little smoother in texture.  Impasto gel give s a gloss appearance, where compound is matt and more dense- like toothpaste consistency

I then had this colour left over from another project and started by using a paintbrush and it wasn't going on so well so I put a blob on with my spatula and then smeared it- gee that was looking better, then I used vertical motions and viola!

I then mixed 2 shades of brown and smeared that below- ensuring there was some mixing of  the colours.

I love the unstructured lines, bumps and smears of paint and texture.

I allowed it to dry and hung it back in its rightful place.

But didn't like it with the darker brown on top- so turned it around- that's better!
Hope you like it. J

3D memory Canvas

I started this canvas months ago and finally managed to get it finished now that I am on holidays.

Firstly I collected bits and bobs that were meaningful to me eg.  a baby shoe, the first letter of my name, a cross, old jewellery, shells ect...
I glued gunned them on or you could use Atelier Modelling compound, which I used for the shells.

Next, I spray painted  it with a brown toned spray paint
I then used Dulux, wash and wear white paint and did a few coats, so as to not have brush strokes.

I then used Jo Sonja's Glaze Medium between coats of burnt Umber acrylic and white paint.

I wanted to achieve that old/vintage look.  After all had dried, I used the dry brush method of highlighting the items with vintage gold acrylic paint.  And ta da- my 3D memory canvas.

Clay canvas

Today I went to an art workshop where I learnt some fabulous painting techniques. One of them was using slip (very wet clay) , PVA glue and acrylic paint. Basically you mix them together and smear the mixture onto the canvas to create whatever textured image that you desire. I will post the photo's tomorrow as my phone won't seem to allow me to insert photo's. So stay tuned!

Father's Day

At the last minute I decided I would make dad a fathers day card.  I started with a 'practice' design.
Then bambino no. 2 wanted to do some drawing too....

Pencil first then pen after.  Pretty cute hey?  It is a King Fairy for grandad.

I was going to go over it in pen, but time permitted and I thought it looked OK without the pen. So there you have it, a home made card for dad for Father's Day.

Lanterns @ Twilight

Well, better late than never!  Here are some pics of Lanterns at Twilight a few weeks ago.  The night started with Fire Twirler I hired and then the parade of lanterns.  The Fire twirler then did a performance for the children.  There were 350 people in the parade hinted with mystical music and lanterns.  What a beautiful evening!
